It’s been in all the ads; ‘Testament playing ‘The Legacy’ in it’s entirity at the O2 Academy in London.’ Most of us, including me, thought that this would be a one time thing for Europe. Luckily the band decided to perform , or maybe to warm-up, a night earlier at the well-known Dynamo in Eindhoven. A support act had been mentioned on site and flyers, but within the first notes of ‘Over The Wall’ we knew that Testament were the appetizer and main course in a packed Dynamo. And what a meal it was. All nine tracks from ‘The Legacy’ were played back to back followed by the best songs from ‘The New Order’, such as ‘Trial By Fire’, ‘Into The Pit’ and ‘Disciples of The Watch’. All of the tracks from the band’s first two albums were played with such brutality that eardrums were shattered, even at the back of the venue. The emphasis was on the drums a bit too much, which at times drowned Skolnick’s and Peterson’s guitars. That’s just splitting hairs though, as everyone in the club had an amazing time in the company of these legendary songs. For an encore we got ‘More Than Meets The Eye’ and ‘The Formation Of Damnation’ both from the band’s 2008 album. The final song demonstrating once again how most nu metal and metalcore bands will never top the legends of the 80s. Testament have stood the test of time and even 22 years after their first ever European show (which was in the same town)., they opened the doorway to metal heaven…. Martijn Welzen
